“How often should I be washing my hair”? This is probably one of most common questions I get asked by clients. And honestly, it really just depends on the person. My go-to answer would probably be ‘every other day’. The problem is that lathering up on a daily basis strips the hair of important healthy oils, which can cause it to break off over time. Over washing your hair can also dry out your scalp causing it to produce more sebum and make hair look greasier…its a vicious cycle I know ;). I personally shampoo every three days, but I have long, dry, processed hair. So I am able to get away with it. And if it starts looking crazy greasy, I just add a little cornstarch to my roots. Dry shampoo works well also to soak up some of that grease, with the added bonus of keeping it smelling fresh.
If you are a person with oily or super-fine hair, you probably have to wash more often. Or if you hit the gym, it may also be challenging not to wash everyday. Still, I would recommend getting a dry shampoo you like and try to go for every other day instead; your scalp will likely adjust to your new washing pattern and produce less grease overtime. I think ‘second day’ hair is my best hair day…the natural oils from your scalp help tame flyways and give hair a great shine. Your hair is also less ‘slippery’ which makes it easier to experiment with different hair styles!
